There are also important
structures that are near the limbic system. These also affect your emotional
life and are directly connected to the limbic system. The most important of
these structures are the cingulate gyrus, ventral tegmental, basal ganglia, and
the prefrontal cortex. The cingulate gyrus is right next to the limbic system.
It is mainly important because it is responsible for directing our attention to
significant emotional events in our lives. It also associates memories to smell
and pain. The ventral tegmental area has many pathways for dopamine, a chemical
that is known to give you the feeling of reward or accomplishment. “People with
damage here usually have trouble finding pleasure, and turn to drugs, alcohol,
or gambling for satisfaction.” (The Emotional Nervous System). The basal
ganglia, which lies on the sides of the limbic system, usually causes
repetitive behaviors, reward experiences, and focusing attention. The
prefrontal cortex mainly is used for thinking of the future and making plans.
It is also involved in some of the same dopamine pathways as the ventral
tegmental area. It also has a role in pleasure and addiction. These parts of
the brain are very important when concerning your emotions.
