The limbic system is
mainly responsible for your emotional life, and it also plays a big part in creating
memories. It includes the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, and other parts
of the brain. The hypothalamus is extremely busy. It regulates things we cannot
control to maintain homeostasis. It controls things like hunger, thirst, pulse,
blood pressure, and many other things. The hippocampus is also important and
valuable. It is what creates memories in the brain. If you injure it and it
becomes damaged, you will never be able to form new memories again! You will
have your old memories only and wake up thinking you had recently the accident
that damaged it. Everything you go through in your life just fades away. The
amygadalas are two almond-shaped masses of neurons in the hippocampus. “When it
is stimulated electrically, animals respond with aggression. If the amygdala is
removed, animals get very tame and no longer respond to things that would have
caused rage before. But there is more to it than just anger: when removed,
animals also become indifferent to stimuli that would have otherwise caused
fear or even sexual responses..”(The Emotional Nervous System) Fear and
aggression have their place in the survival of animals therefore the function
of the amygadalas is very important. The Limbic system is important in humans.
